Number of Canadian Anglicans, Parishes and Congregations
In 2001, the last year for which published statistics are available [1]:
The total number of Anglicans on parish rolls was 641, 845.
The total number of Anglican parishes was 1,792.
The total number of Anglican congregations was 2,884.
Many parishes contain more than one congregation especially in rural areas. Multi-point parishes, as they are also known, may contain from two to as many as ten points (congregations).
[1] Information from p. 15 of the 2008 Anglican Church Directory re STATISTICS:
Please note: The 2005 Anglican Church Directory was the last edition to contain consolidated statistical information concerning our Church across Canada. Unfortunately, those statistics only covered the years up to 2001. Over the last two years, staff and volunteers at the parish and diocesan levels have been working together with General Synod secretariat in an effort to develop a more consistent manner of collecting and collating these vital church statistics in an accurate and timely fashion.
We are pleased to report that, as a result of this collaborative partnership, good progress is being made. We are currently working to collate and validate the Church statistics for the 2002 to 2006 period. Unfortunately, due to the intense work required, this information will not be available in time for the 2008 edition of the Anglican Church Directory. Accordingly, we are making provision for these statistics to be posted on our Anglican Church of Canada web site (www.anglican.ca) as they become available. Current statistical information will once again become part of the Church Directory in 2009.
