ARCHBISHOP FRED HILTZ HOSTS REGIONAL PRIMATES’ MEETING IN TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA

[Toronto, Ont., 26 November, 2018] Primates from the Americas and the Caribbean region of the Anglican Communion are gathering in Toronto, Ontario, Canada from November 27-29 in advance of the Lambeth 2020 Conference. This is the third of several regional meetings to be held across the Anglican Communion.

The primates of the region include:

  • the Primate of Brazil & Bishop of Curitiba, the Most Rev’d Naudal Alves Gomes;
  • the Primate of Iglesia Anglicana de la Region Central de America & Bishop of Panama, the Rt. Rev’d Julio Murray Thompson;
  • the Primate of the Church in the Province of the West Indies, whose representative will be the Rt. Rev. Leopold Friday;
  • the Presiding Bishop of La Iglesia Anglicana de Mexico & Bishop of Northern Mexico, the Most Rev’d Francisco Moreno;
  • the Presiding Bishop of the Anglican Church of South America & Bishop of Argentina, the Most Rev’d Gregory James Venables;
  • the Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, the Most Rev’d Michael Curry;
  • the Primate of Iglesia Anglicana de Chile & Bishop of Santiago, the Most Rev’d Héctor Zavala Muñoz (Tito Zavala); and
  • the Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, the Most Rev’d Frederick Hiltz.

The Primates will be joined by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev’d Justin Welby, and the Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, the Most Rev’d Josiah Idowu-Fearon.

In addition to discussing the Lambeth 2020 Conference, the primates will be discussing common matters of concern including the Instruments of Communion, the report from the Primates Meeting Task Force, ACC Standing Committee representation from the Primates of the Americas, and changes to membership and youth representation at the Anglican Consultative Council.

Quotes from Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada:

“I am very happy to welcome all of the primates of our region of the Communion. This is a meeting that is conversational. We are not making decisions or pronouncements. We are being invited by the Archbishop of Canterbury to come together in our respective regions to have conversations. These conversations will then feed into the Lambeth design group for Lambeth 2020.”

“I take the Canadian contribution to the conversation of Lambeth 2020 very seriously. It is for all the bishops – not for just the Primates – to shape the agenda.”

“At the last meeting of the Canadian House of Bishops, we had good conversations about the Instruments of Communion and how they bolster the life and witness of the Communion as a whole. We also reflected on the theme of Lambeth 2020: God’s Church for God’s World.”

“Our own bishops in Canada are looking forward to learning about ministry in other local contexts; building relationships; understanding our witness of the local and the whole. Also, many Canadian bishops are interested in matters of concern for the household of faith including the nature of a post-colonial church; honoring Indigenous self-determination; learning from other indaba conversations across the Communion; reconciliation; sustainable development goals; and combatting gender-based violence among other matters.”
