The registration process is now underway for the Third International Conference on Afro-Anglicanism to be held this summer (July 20-27) in Toronto.
The conference will take place at the University of Toronto under the theme, Celebrating the Gifts of Afro-Anglicanism. Keynote speakers and workshops will address spiritual, global and social issues.
About 500 Anglicans, from around the world representing various parts of the Anglican Communion are expected to attend. The Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, Archbishop Andrew Hutchison, will be present to welcome the participants.
The conference will accommodate different levels of participation — delegates, visitors and people attending public worship events. There will be considerable participation by youth and young adults, said Rev. Canon Stephen Fields, chair of the local planning committee.

Registration fees are: for adults attending the whole week, $600, and for young people (18 to 30): $300. There is a daily fee of $125 for adults and $50 for young people. These fees include meals and conference documents but not accommodation.
The conference on Afro-Anglicanism is held every 10 years. The inaugural conference was in Barbados in 1985, and the second conference in Cape Town, South Africa 1995 at the invitation of then-Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
The idea of a conference of black Anglicans originated with the Rev. Canon Frederick Boyd Williams, rector of the Church of the Intercession, New York, as a result of his study on Pan-Africanism, and his work and participation in the anti-apartheid and black freedom movements.
Resolutions from the Barbados and South Africa conferences helped to shape the Anglican Communion’s response to pressing world concerns through the two pre-Lambeth Afro-Anglican Bishops’ Symposia, which were organized by the Rev. Canon Harold Lewis, in 1988 and 1998.

LETTER OF INVITATION TO ATTEND THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AFRO-ANGLICANISM
The Planning Committee of the Third International Conference on Afro-Anglicanism invite you to participate in the conference planned for July 20-27, 2005.
This conference is held once every ten years and we’re thrilled that Toronto has been selected as the site of the 2005 Conference. The 1995 conference was held in Capetown, South Africa in 1995 at the invitation of the then Archbishop, The Most Reverend Desmond Tutu. In 1985 we came together for the first time at Codrington College, Barbados. We are delighted to say that our Primate, The Most Rev’d. Andrew Hutchison, will be present to welcome this conference to Toronto.
The Committee’s goals for 2005 include bringing together Anglicans from Africa and in the African Diaspora for this vital gathering. We are projecting that about five hundred conferees, observers and their families will journey to Toronto to participate in this endeavour.
The Conference will, inter alia, seek to:
– Embrace the Afro-Anglican ministry of reconciliation based on the origin of the Lambeth Conference,
– Affirm the Black Anglican Community living in Canada,
– Support and promote the spiritual wellness of Afro-Anglican clergy and laity,
– Engage each other in learning and mutual understanding,
– Go with a renewed sense of mission in Christ to our respective part of the world
Our Committee considers this conference as a gift to, and an evangelistic opportunity for, the Anglican Church of Canada. For this reason, the conference is not limited only to Afro-Anglicans. It is a conference for all who are interested in, and committed to, the issues which will be addressed during our time together.
