A statement from the Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, Archbishop Fred Hiltz
At the urgent request of The Most Rev. Dr. Mouneer Hanna Anis, President Bishop, Jerusalem & the Middle East & Bishop in Egypt with North Africa and the Horn of Africa, I am asking all Anglicans across Canada to uphold the people of Egypt in their prayers.
In the continuing political turmoil the toll on human life has been devastatingly heavy this week. Pray for the hundreds who have died, for all who are in mourning and all who are tending the seriously wounded.
The use of such brutal force by the military has been described as “unacceptable” by numerous political and religious leaders around the world. We pray for all who are pressing for a reasoned and peaceful resolution to the unrest that is tearing apart the life and limb, the heart and soul of Egypt.
I remember being in Alexandria and Cairo for the meeting of Anglican Communion primates in 2009. Egypt is a beautiful land — so rich in history and in all the humanities, so dear to the people of many faith traditions. Pray with me that the day may be hastened when, “No longer will violence be heard in your land, nor ruin or destruction within your borders,” (Isaiah 60:18)
