Church welcomes court decisions

The following statement was issued today by the Venerable Michael Pollesel, General Secretary of the Anglican Church of Canada:

The Anglican Church of Canada welcomes the court decisions released today in seven of the nine jurisdictions which approved the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. We look forward to all the parties getting together as soon as possible to resolve the outstanding issues identified in certain of the decisions so that the court approval process can be finalized expeditiously and class members can be compensated sooner rather than later.

We also encourage the federal government seriously consider the request by The Honourable Chief Justice Brenner, of British Columbia, to consider “issuing a full and unequivocal apology on behalf of the people of Canada in the House of Commons.”
