PWRDF aid gets through in Kenya

PWRDF is a member of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB), an organization comprised of 15 Canadian Churches and agencies working together to end hunger through food aid, food security, education, and action.  PWRDF is part of the $8.8 million response that CFGB is implementing in East Africa.  PWRDF is helping to provide food and cooking supplies to 8400 households affected by the drought in Kenya through CFGB.

CFGB’s executive Director, Jim Cornelius, recently returned from Kenya, and spoke last week about how the food aid is getting to those in need in that country.  Here is some of his presentation:

I was recently in northern Kenya, one of the areas affected by drought.  This is an area primarily inhabited by pastoralists, people who depend on livestock for their livelihoods. They have faced two years of drought. Many water points have dried up. Pasture is very poor, and often far from the remaining water points. Their livestock are in poor condition, with many animals having died-you could see the dead carcasses.  With food prices having doubled, households are struggling to survive.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that aid was getting through. Even in very remote parts of the country-places that are literally at the end of the road (and a very bad road at that)-people told me they were receiving food assistance, and that it was keeping them going.

Drought is a natural phenomenon.  But drought turns into famine as the result of political failures-as it has in Somalia.  Let us pray for those struggling to find political solutions in Somalia that will ensure aid gets to the people who need it.

At the Foodgrains Bank, our vision is of a world without hunger.  Let’s imagine what part we can play in ending hunger in our community and in other parts of the world.

The relief work in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia is ongoing.  If you wish to donate to this relief effort, your donation will be matched by the Canadian government into the East Africa Drought Fund if it is made by September 16, 2011.
