Don’t have a guitar? Don’t despair. All genres are welcome—traditional hymns, cheerful folk, danceable reggae, etc. Ours is a diverse church and this contest is open to all.

“Music is many things to many listeners but most Anglicans agree about how important music is to our worship and our daily lives,” said Lisa Barry, Anglican Video senior producer and a primary organizer of the project.

“The Marks of Mission music competition provides an exciting opportunity to all Canadian Anglicans with an ear for music to chime in.”

The winning songwriter will be given a professional recording session and their song will be promoted throughout the Anglican Church of Canada and beyond.

There are just a few rules: songs must be submitted as home recordings (not professional) and the song must relate to one or all of the Marks of Mission, which are used to describe and encourage ministry throughout the worldwide Anglican Communion. This song contest is one of three designed to encourage Canadian Anglicans to see the Marks of Mission as a framework for their current ministry.

The Marks of Mission describe activities that serve to:

  • proclaim the good news of the kingdom;
  • teach, baptize and nurture new believers;
  • respond to human need by loving service;
  • transform unjust structures of society; and
  • safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.

The first contest, which closed Sept. 16, called for Sunday school curriculum ideas from across the country. Four winners, one from each ecclesiastical province, will be flown to Toronto to develop a national Sunday school resource with Susan Graham Walker, an expert educator and workshop facilitator. Ms. Walker is also co-author of God, Kids, & Us (Anglican Book Centre, 1996), a book about ministry with children and their caregivers.

Ms. Walker’s workshop to develop the Sunday school resource will take place Nov. 25-27 and the winners will be announced by mid-October on www.anglican.ca.

The final Marks of Mission contest will be launched in 2012.
